I wonder if anyone can help me identify the textual critics in these ten photos. Who occurs twice?
1 (amended; earlier edition here)
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
10
A forum for people with knowledge of the Bible in its original languages to discuss its manuscripts and textual history from the perspective of historic evangelical theology.
Well, #2 is Tischendorf, and #8 is Hort; #4 (a poor photo) appears to be John Wevers?
ReplyDeleteHmmmm...lemme think:
ReplyDelete1 Peter Head
2 T. M. Law
3 Michael Bird
4 Peter Williams
5 D Jongkind
6 Gie Vleugels
7 Christian Askeland
8 James Palmer
9 Tommy Wasserman
10 Mike Holmes
Ian, you forgot to say which one occurs twice.
ReplyDelete#2 is Tischendorf
ReplyDelete#7 is Tischendorf ?
#4 is indeed Wevers.
ReplyDeleteAye, ##2 and 7 are the same.
ReplyDelete#1 is Westcott (the Freemason - looks like the wrong Westcott)
ReplyDelete#5 looks like Bart Ehrman. Perhaps he had to wear old fashion clothes at MBI.
ReplyDeleteNone of them are very happy. Only the older Tischendorf has the hint of a smile. Perhaps "discovering" Sinaiticus made him happy.
ReplyDelete#9 & 10 both look exceptionally miserable. Probably clergymen.
ReplyDelete#7 is Tischendorf for sure. I can even make out in the photo that he is tucking away a stolen manuscript in his pocket.
ReplyDelete#5 looks somewhat like Max Leopold Margolis
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are actually a King James Onlyist hit list. They are the 10 most wanted for "corrupting" the scriptures.
ReplyDeleteCan't be a "KJV only hit list"--#10 is Burgon himself!
ReplyDeleteah, good point.
ReplyDeleteI can see what Peter means about the resemblances of #5. #5 is not Margolis, though he is known for his work on the Septuagint.
ReplyDeleteAlfred Rahlfs!
ReplyDeletePeter, thanks for pointing out my goof on Westcott (now amended)—all part of an attempt to get less usual photos.
ReplyDeleteSo far we have:
1 Westcott
2 Tischendorf
4 Wevers
7 Tischendorf
8 Hort
10 Burgon
Peter Head has correctly surmised that #9 is a clergyman. He will also have a chapter devoted to him in a forthcoming work that will survey the history of NT textual criticism.
I will start with other clues soon if there's no further advance.
#9 is Bengel
ReplyDeleteBengel and Rahlfs correctly identified. Only two to go...
ReplyDelete#9 is not a photgraph, though.
ReplyDeleteCall it a pseudofacsimile if you must, but a photographic representation it isn't.
Daniel, Good point. No doubt people were held back from identifying #9 by this false lead :-)
ReplyDeleteOf the two who remain, one changed his name; the other changed what came after his name.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to take a stab at #6 and say it's a young Kurt Aland.
ReplyDelete#6 is TC Skeat, perhaps?
ReplyDelete10 is burgon; 9 is Bengal; 8 is Hort; 7 & 2 are Tischendorf; 6 is Skeat; 5 is Wilhelm Bousset (Religionsgeschichliche Schule); The profile of one suggests and English or Dutch scholar - unknown to me. The photo I have of Rahlfs is without beard. Sorry that's the best I can do.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that. I've got my own list at Who are these?
ReplyDeleteMike Holmes is correct about #6.
ReplyDeleteSo #3 is the image that foxed people. It is, of course, the person who changed his name since #6 changed what followed his name when he resigned as FBA (Fellow of the British Academy).
ReplyDelete#3 published editions of primary texts in many languages. He was also notoriously anti-Semitic.
I see I need to correct myself. 5 is A. Rahlfs not W. Bousset. Who is 3? By the way Stephen's pictures are a real challenge too.
ReplyDelete3 must be an American scholar. Is he from the Chicago area?
ReplyDeleteIs 3 Edgar Goodspeed?
ReplyDeleteAh. An anti-Semitic orientalist. Syriac specialist. Quite dapper. Why should he look happier and more contented than all the other?
ReplyDeletede Lagarde
ReplyDeletea.k.a. Paul Bötticher
ReplyDeleteBlogger word verification finally made a word: 'drank'. Obviously significant information. Is that why he changed his name? Or was that to do with his study of Syriac?
Good game Pete,
ReplyDeletelet's do another one
I though Michael Bird and Gie Vleugels were the same person?
ReplyDeleteMy bad.
