I can't make head or tail of the names and numbers, having been trained on Nestle-Aland. So, is it too much to hope, from a perspective outside of Byzantine Majority Text fandom, that these might be mss of ... perhaps critical value?
ReplyDeleteI understand the lectionary texts are useful in their own right as well, but what might we expect from these as far as text-critical value?
The numbers are local library numbers. I don't think the manuscripts have Nestle-Aland numbers yet. I think that's the point. These are newly discoverd, yet to be studied or catalogued manuscripts.
ReplyDeleteI would say this is no different that the CSTNM anouncing 40 newly found manuscripts. The only down side is about half the manuscripts are 16th century or later, which brings in the possibility of contamination from the printed editions.
Even if their value is in establishing the Byzantine Text, they have value critical value.

In clarification to Matthew's question.
ReplyDeleteThese are all new manuscripts. Therefore, as yet they have no Gregory-Aland number assigned to them. They are listed by region and shelf no. in the monasteries or holding institution.
As to their critical value, this again depends upon ones perspective about the textual value of Byzantine Greek New Testament MSS.

Ah! Thank you for the clarification. So this isn't, for example, a more general public availability of already-indexed mss that are (for example) grouped under the siglum for the Byzantine Majority in the Nestle-Aland apparatus.
ReplyDeleteSo they do have potential for adding light to the picture of the middle- and later-medieval transmission of the Byzantine text.
For those interested, there are additional manuscripts posted in one of our news updates of today.
ReplyDeleteThey are late Byzantine MSS but we regard them as equal in value just the same. This will be all it appears until we gain access to a larger selection through our sources in the near future.
