Videos on Bible History from Amsterdam

Just this week, John Meade and I returned from a 2-week trip to Amsterdam to do some speaking and teaching at Tyndale Seminary in the Netherlands. We had a wonderful time there with pastors, leaders, and students and were encouraged to see the work being done there. (My only disappointment was that they had no statue of their most famous graduate, Dirk Jongkind!) If you are looking for an excellent evangelical seminary in Europe with a vision for global ministry, be sure to consider it.

The Preachers and Leaders conference we spoke at was also the occasion for the release of Scribes & Scripture in Dutch. One of the most exciting features of that for us as authors is that the Dutch version includes two new chapters by Paulus-Jan Kieviet.

Paulus-Jan works with Wycliffe/SIL and added chapters on the Bible in Dutch and the Bible in contemporary global translation work. We are very grateful for his contribution that will make the book much more useful for a Dutch audience.

We’ve uploaded two more videos to our TCI YouTube channel from my ThM TC course. You can find all the guest lecture videos here (not all are recorded).

The first new video is from Joey McCollum on identifying textual clusters and is based on his recent AUSS article on the same topic. The second is by Clark Bates on the origin of Greek minuscule. Clark is soon headed off to Birmingham and we wish him and his family well, especially as they adjust to life with no sun and temps below 110°F. Thanks to both for sharing their research with us.

Hernández: 2020 Alexander Thompson Memorial Lecture

Before the coronavirus madness, Juan Hernández Jr. delivered this year’s Rev. Alexander Thompson Memorial Lecture at Princeton Theological Seminary. The lecture is titled “Recovering Revelation’s Forgotten Textual History: Josef Schmid’s Magnum Opus for the Twenty-First Century.” If you’ve already finished Tiger King, you now have something to watch.

Juan also sent this photo and says, “Also, with B.B. Warfield above my left shoulder and a sneering Josef Schmid directly to my right, I had to walk a fine line in talking about the value of historical perspective in the textual criticism of the book of Revelation!”

Sacred Words Videos Online

The videos from our recent Sacred Words conference are now online at the TCI YouTube channel. We filmed all the speakers in the main auditorium. This included Peter Gentry on the text of the OT, ETC’s own Anthony Ferguson on DSS, Stephen Dempster on OT canon, and Dan Wallace on NT text. (We didn’t have the equipment to film the other breakout speakers.) It was really a great conference and we were pleased with how it turned out, especially for our first such event. Thanks to all our speakers!

Understanding and Teaching the CBGM

For SBL this year I was invited by the German Bible Society to present something related to mine and Tommy’s book on the CBGM. Since I’ve had several years now of trying to explain to people what the CBGM is, how it works, and why it’s valuable I decided to talk about how we go about teaching the method. I shared some of the difficulties I’ve had doing that and some of the things I’ve tried to do to address them. You can read the full paper online.

One question I got in the Q&A was if I could put together some short YouTube videos. Each video could maybe explore a different aspect of the method, giving examples and that might be a good entry point for students. That’s a good idea and I might try to do that if I find the time. I am keen to find more ways to make the CBGM easy easier to understand.

In the mean time, I said I would share a lecture I gave at my seminary earlier this year that may serve as a good starting point for students. I’ve also uploaded the slides (which aren’t in the video) so you can follow along. My part of the talk starts around the 33 minute mark. Let me know if you find this helpful, especially if you’re a teacher.
