036: A nice looking Oxford late majuscule

4
The other day in class we were reading Mark 14 and I noticed the variant at Mark 14.61 for the omission of ὁ χριστὸς (in Gamma and k). Gamma (036) is not one of those manuscripts that I am very familiar with, so this became an opportunity to show the class how to look up in the information in Appendix 1 (at the back of NA28). Lo and behold it is a local Oxford manuscript. Here is a nice colour photo from the Digital Bodleian.

And here is an image (from NT.VMR) of the passage under discussion:

  1. Transcription for those who may have difficulty reading the type of Majuscule writing there:

The case of omitting ὁ χριστός be a simple case of homoeoarchon? [ὁ] χριστός [ὁ] υἱὸς

    1. According to Von Soden, this omission occurs also in
Φ=20043 (: INTF has no pictures, Transkription is conjecture).
INTF 30251-2560 (checked that, is ok).

Jülicher Vetus Latina Africana e has "tu es filius benedicti": (omitting Xristus).

Von Soden is still an important source for finding Variants. A bit cumborsome in handling, but together with the Kurzgefasste Liste, one can easily trace the Mss and check them in the INTF Manuscript-Pictures.

    2. Interestingly NA27 also notes Φ pc as agreeing with Γ/k, both of which have not been repeated in NA28 (pc and al have been removed for some reasons; see NA28 intro p. 5* / 49*). There's some images of the manuscript online at the CSNTM however: http://www.csntm.org/manuscript/View/GA_043 , however based on the thumbnail on the INTF, this page is not on CSNTM (shame).

Min. 251 is also on CSNTM: http://www.csntm.org/manuscript/View/GA_251 , which if you search for Mark 14:61, should come up (top line of left-hand page on Image ID 289122), and can confirm this does indeed omit ὁ χριστός :)

    3. Min. 251 has a few other variants here too (insert Ἰ(ησοῦ)ς after δὲ; add τοῦ Θ(εο)ῦ after ὁ υἱὸς).
