The 2008 Greer-Heard Point-Counterpoint Forum, Topic = The Textual Reliability of the NT

New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS) is having the 2008 Greer-Heard Forum on the topic of the Textual Reliability of the New Testament this coming April 4th-5th, with some extra meetings taking place on April 3rd as well. The main speakers are Bart Ehrman and Dan Wallace, with responses by David Parker, Mike Holmes, Dale Martin, and Bill Warren. The event will be on the campus of NOBTS and is jointly sponsored by the Center for New Testament Textual Studies. As you might surmise, Bart Ehrman's works on "Misquoting Jesus" and "The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture" will figure heavily in the discussions. The Evangelical Philosophical Society will be hosting a special event in connection with this forum with several well-known evangelical scholars present in conjunction with that event. Also, Martin Heide is the speaker on Thursday at two events hosted by the Center for New Testament Textual Studies and the Biblical Studies Division. His presentations relate to the NT text and canon. For more information or to register, go to the Greer-Heard website (www.greer-heard.com). Housing is available at a modest cost on the seminary campus.

  1. Dr. Warren, do you have any information on the cost of staying on campus?

  4. Wow, really wish I could attend. Nice job getting two of Bruce Metzger's most famous students to come.

  5. As for housing, the costs range from hotel-type rooms that run about $55 per night to dorm-type rooms that are about $20 per night. Reservations should be made as soon as possible since we expect a rather large crowd for the conference.

On publishing the papers, my understanding is that Fortress Press is committed to publishing them, as they have done with some of the prior Greer-Heard Forums that we've had. As Peter noted, audio files will also be available of the presentations. The book will include some contributions that are not presented at the conference but reflect upon the presentations at the conference or upon the themes of the conference, so the book will be more exhaustive in scope.

Dale Martin was invited as a speaker at Bart's request. Some may remember that at the SBL meetings in Philadelphia a forum was held with Tom Wright, Dominic Crossan, Bart Ehrman, and Dale Martin, with a lively discussion resulting. Based on that, Bart knows Dale's views on the subject and wanted those represented at the conference.

  6. Let me clarify one matter on the housing costs: the $55 is for the room, not per person for the hotel-style housing. In other words, it works out to about $28 per person per night.

  7. I can't attend but would really, really like to be notified when and how I can get a copy of the dialogue of the presentation/debate. Could I get a link or reference to a source of text of this forum? ... or even better a video posting of it? ... or DVD?

Appreciate any assistance. This sounds like it will be of assistance to students of textual criticism everywhere.
