ETC Dinner at SBL

25
It looks (to Tommy and myself) as if Monday evening should be the time for our annual ETC dinner at SBL (by far the majority of other receptions are on the weekend nights). In the programme there is an ECM session (P21-325; 4:00PM - 7:30PM), so it would probably be best to begin after that session I suppose (not sure whether the business part of that session is open or closed, but someone could tell us in the comments). But we are open to objections and alternative plans in the comments (for a few days anyway). Also ideas for places to eat would be welcome.

  1. I was thinking I'd attend this year, if that's alright. Mon night works for me.

  3. Where to eat:

I don't get up to the City much (and when I do, I usually just get a clam chowder bowl at Boudins), but the following links may help:

SF Chronical top 100 restaurants (includes stuff outside San Francisco): http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/listings/restaurants/listtop2011?Submit=1

A slightly more useful way to see the list is:

Moscone Center is located between 3rd and 4th and between Mission and Folsom.

  4. I will be there as well and looking forward to seeing you all.

By the way, the lecture I am giving on Sunday on the Testament of Abraham ("The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture...")shows how orthodox corrupion really works - an entertaining, somwewhat funny story about Abraham refusing to die is changed into an orthodox, canonized (!) piece of literature and transmitted accurately after that...

  5. Peter, the "business meeting" after the ECM session is in fact an IGNTP committee meeting; I am secretary, and your boss is the chair. I guess you will have to wait for us!

  6. Was there not an "Ur-ETC Dinner" in San Diego as well. It might be reconstructed by looking at Peter's reflections: http://evangelicaltextualcriticism.blogspot.com/2007/11/sbl-san-diego-random-reflections.html.

  9. This place looks like it could be OK: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g60713-d354119-Reviews-Sam_s_Grill-San_Francisco_California.html

Positives: Within one mile; various prices (could eat on a reasonable budget); has private booths; surly waitress; has a history; variety of food on offer.

  10. I think we need plenty of room (this blogdinner is ever growing).

  11. Is 20 enough? Or do we need a place with lots of options?

  12. Peter, we were probably around 20 last time. Perhaps we should have people signify their intention to take part (as some have already done)?

  13. Due to various flukes, I and three of my other colleagues here at CNTTS are leaving early and would not be able to make a Monday night dinner. However, I think Dr. Warren and two others from CNTTS would be able to attend.

  14. My girlfriend will be there as well, if that is allowed. She would like to know better this strange species of textual critics.

  15. She is of course welcome Jan. And, as Peter says, there are "private booths" which you could escape to in case of emergency.

  16. Would a novice like me be allowed to join, Tommy?

  17. Thanks, Tommy.

Actually, am now inside the University of Michigan Papyrology Collection Reading Room... examining P46! This papyrus is absolutely amazing! There are still so much physical details that need to told about this manuscript! Very supportive staff as well!

    See you in SF!

  18. Edgar, be careful you don't drop it.

  19. Hahaha I won't, Peter!

The scribe of P46 is really cool! Hope to write a blog later about this guy! But in the meantime, I will enjoy his company to the fullest, me and him, alone in this very deafeningly quiet room...
