Trouble Commenting on the Blog

8

If you’ve been having trouble commenting on the blog using your Google account, as I have, it may be because of your cookie settings. From Blogger’s help files:

Blogger uses third-party cookies so you can comment from your Google Account. If third-party cookies are disabled on your browser, you may not be able to comment on blog posts while you’re signed in. You can still comment anonymously, or with a name and URL.

In Chrome, which stats say most of you are using to read this, you can enable third-party cookies by going to Settings > Privacy and security and then select either Allow all cookies or Block third-party cookies in Incognito.

If you don’t want to allow any third-party cookies, you should still be able to comment by choosing Comment as Name/URL in the commenting dropdown.

If this works for you, could you leave a comment and let me know?

As a final word, please keep your comments on topic

Blog Maintenance: New Subscription Manager

0

Hi all. For a while the blog has used Feedburner.com to keep track of subscriber stats and to handle email subscriptions. Unfortunately, Feedburner has basically been dead in the water for some time. Recently Google announced it would drop support for the email subscription feature altogether.

So, as of today, I have switched the ETC blog over to Follow.it to handle both features. If you currently receive the blog by email, I am working on moving your email over. So far, I’ve managed to migrate the most recent 100 subscribers but I’m waiting on someone on their staff to do the rest. (Update: All is now migrated.) If you don’t want to wait, you can always subscribe with this link—unless you’re a robot. Your ETC emails will now be delivered through Follow.it which gives you some control over how and when you get them.

I’ve also updated the RSS icon at the top of the page to point you to Follow.it. The email subscription form in the sidebar does the same. If you want to bypass Follow.it altogether, you can still do that using the Atom link. If none of this means anything to you, you might be a robot.

Please let me know if you spot problems.

Commenting Tips

3
Just a quick note for our faithful blog commenters. Blogger allows for some basic HTML formatting which you may find useful. You can bold, italicize, and link as follows:
  1. If you want to italicize something, just enclose it in <em> or <i> tags like so: I <em>love</em> the ETC blog = I love the ETC blog. Notice that with HTML, the closing tag is always marked by a forward slash (/). This tells the browser where to stop italicizing.
  2. You can do the same with bold using either <b> or <strong> like this: I <b>hate</b> using von Soden’s apparatus = I hate using von Soden’s apparatus.
  3. Links are slightly more complicated but will make you feel young and hip. To use links, just enclose your text in an <a> tag and put your URL in the href attribute like so: <a href="http://tinyurl.com/pweo5bv">don’t end up like Peter Head</a> = don’t end up like Peter Head.
Like all good things, use in moderation.

P.S. On the subject of the blog, I’ve removed the Google Friend Connect box from the sidebar because it was super slow. (For all two of you that still use it, it is accessible from the green “g” in the sidebar.) I’ve also fixed up the mobile version of the site so you can waste more time read the blog on the go. As always, let me know if you encounter problems.

Conjectural Emendation: Yea or Nay?

31
I am testing the polling function on the new design and thought I would start with something that came up last night at the ETC blog dinner: conjectural emendation (discussed before on this blog).

Do you approve of conjectural emendation for the New Testament?

Testing New Blog Features

4
I am trying out some new features on the ETC blog, one of which is a search box in the right sidebar. I tried it out by writing "GA" in the box and it returned a whole bunch of entries about MSS (GA = Gregory-Aland). Try it out for yourself and feel free to comment.
