A forum for people with knowledge of the Bible in its original languages to discuss its manuscripts and textual history from the perspective of historic evangelical theology.
I should think that some textual critics will enjoy this short musical interlude.
Fun.
ReplyDeleteThe Monthly Review 1764 p.395 has "God rest you, merry Gentlemen."
And the earliest known printing--if 1760, as some claim--in a broadside, "Three New Christmas Carols" has
"God rest on merry, Gentlemen."
Shouldn't it be God rest *you* merry in any event? "Ye" would be in the nominative case, which I suppose could just barely be made sense of as a vocative.
