BnF Copte Online

White Monastery and related Coptic materials at the Bibliothèque nationale de France

For my own personal pleasure, I have outlined and here share links to BnF Coptic materials online. I am aware that I have ignored the Arabic, a considerable portion of the Bohairic and papyri. The present list focuses on the White Monastery parchments.

  1. Very interesting. Which century are these manuscripts dated to? Do you know? Are there English translations of these manuscripts available? Just curious.

    1. While scholars have dated these MSS from the Roman period into the thirteenth century, the extant colophons begin in the tenth century. The BnF is one of the primary holding collections for the White Monastery fragments. In the 1880's, french scholars attempted to purchase the entire remains of the library. The manuscripts have shattered, and often only five to fifteen percent of any given codex will survive. In terms of indigenous Coptic literature, much of the perfectly preserved Phantoou Library remains unpublished.
