  2. Hort the speaker? (He was very close to Tregelles textually, and very different to him theologically).

To whom? I don't know - Westcott? Lightfoot?

  5. Andrew is correct on the speaker/writer. Not on the hearer/reader.

B.W. Newton shared the same theological intolerance [i.e. strict evangelicalism] as Tregelles.

Actually you'll probably never guess the heaer/reader.

  7. Yes,

    A letter to C.R. Gregory:
    28 December 1876
    "…
I am extremely sorry to hear that Dr Davidson has allowed himself to use such language about Tregelles. It is entirely untrue, as far as my knowledge and belief goes. The utmost that could be said is that in cases where good evidence was really divided Tregelles did not always give recognition to a reading which he disliked, and which he doubtless thought impossible; and even this much is very rarely the case, if at all. The fact is that Tregelles’s theological intolerance makes the truthfulness of his Greek text all the more striking. …"

  8. Hort: "Tregelles’s theological intolerance makes the truthfulness of his Greek text all the more striking."

Perhaps this quiz might be continued by asking about the writer of the following similar quotation regarding Tregelles:

"We admire his piety, but it is at the expense of his critical sagacity."

  9. Thanks Maurice,

But it is not really similar is it?

Hort disliked Tregelles' theology but like his text.

Burgon liked Tregelles' theology but disliked his text.

  10. Burgon of course is the correct answer (I thought the "we" might throw people off, but you obviously can't fool Cambridge folk).

Yet it equally would seem that W-H would share Burgon's view, since quite obviously their text was in many places quite different from that of Tregelles, and founded upon quite different theories and methods.

While Burgon in the quote at issue may have "admired" Tregelles' piety, I suspect he would still have opposed strongly Tregelles' position of dissent from the established (Anglican) church.
